Truffle Market
Richerenches has become famous across the world for its legendary annual Truffle Market. This eagerly anticipated event gives committed foodies the chance to buy Richerenches’ famous truffles, an aromatic mushroom that serves as a culinary delicacy across the planet.
The event takes place in the main square of Richerenches from the November of every year to March the following year. Traditionally the Market starts on the first Saturday after the 15th November. Estimates suggest that 700 kilos of truffles are sold per week at the event, making it the biggest truffle market in Europe.
Truffle Mass
The Market has become particularly famous for the Truffle Mass ceremony it holds on the Feast of St Anthony, every January. Established in 1952, this is a traditional Catholic Mass that’s held in the village church to celebrate and bless the ‘black diamond’ a.k.a. the truffle mushroom, which continues to bring prosperity to Richerenches.
This event provides you with a rare opportunity to experience the cultural rituals that have characterised French life for hundreds of years. We’d suggest that you set out to arrive in the village early if you’re visiting Richerenches to celebrate the Truffle Mass. This will give you a chance to watch the mythical Brotherhood of the Knights of the Black Diamond lead the procession up to the church to start the mass.
