The Gallery of the Mediterranean
One of the must see attractions to visit whilst you’re in Marseille is the Gallery of the Mediterranean. This is a 1,500 metre-squared semi-permanent exhibition hosted by the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) in it’s building on the city’s J4 pier.
The exhibition is designed to showcase a range artefacts from four Mediterranean civilisations, ranging from the Neolithic era to the modern day. This collection includes everyday objects and art such as prints, paintings on canvasses, graphic works, drawings and framed icons. Some of these artefacts came to the Gallery from museum collections, whilst others were generously loaned by institutions in France and other countries around the world.
Opening hours and prices
This exhibition offers you a unique chance to discover the beliefs and practises of the people of this historic French region. The MuCEM opens:
- Year-round except Tuesdays, from 11am to 7pm in summer and 11am to 6pm in winter.
- Until 10pm on Fridays between 2nd May and 31st
- However it closes twice a year on 1st May and 31st
You can tour the MuCEM’s entire range of permanent and temporary exhibitions, including the Gallery of the Mediterranean, for very reasonable prices. It costs:
- €8 per full-price ticket.
- €5 per concession ticket.
- €12 per family ticket, (two adults and up to five children).
