Four Attractions to Visit in Arles
During your stay at Benvengudo Hotel you should take some time to explore the city and commune of Arles. Located approximately 30 minute from Benvengudo via car, Arles is a city brimming with culture and history dating back to the Roman Era.
Musée de l’Arles et de la Provence antiques
The Musée de l’Arles antique is a museum which houses a large collection of antiquities, including monumental Roman sculptures from the local region. Among the exhibits is a model of the multiple overshot water mills which existed at Barbegal, and have been referred to as “the greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world”.
Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue
Officially established as a regional park and nature reserve in 1970, the Regional Nature Park of the Camargue covers 820 km². This territory is considered to be some of the most natural and most protected in all of Europe. If you are a history buff, the roadside museum provides background on flora, fauna, and the history of the area.
Arles Amphitheatre
Perhaps the most popular attraction in the city of Arles, the Roman Amphitheatre is a relic of Roman rule. Built in 90 AD, the Amphitheatre could accommodate over 20,000 spectators, and was built to provide entertainment in the form of chariot races and bloody hand-to-hand battles. It is still used today and draws large crowds for plays and concerts in summer.
Church of St. Trophime
Another importance example of Roman architecture, this Roman Catholic church and former cathedral was built between the 12th century and the 15th century. The church was built upon the site of the 5th century basilica of Arles, named for St. Stephen. In the 15th century a Gothic choir was added to the Romanesque nave.
